The victims were hit by stray bullets while trying to escape from gun duel.

The customs men were said to have intercepted four trailers loaded with bag of rice at Iyana Joju Bus stop which is about 1,000 kilometres to the market.

They were trying to escape with the four trailers loaded with rice, an attempt which was vehemently resisted by the smugglers.

An eye witness said that the resistance from the smugglers led to a shoot out.

According to the source, the smugglers did not want to let the bags of rice go because it was alleged that men of the NCS have collected huge amount of money from them.

Business activities at the market were paralysed as shop owners hurriedly closed down.

A source within the service who confirmed the incident, said that the customs men came from the Federal Operating Unit, Ikeja, carried out the operation.

He said the dead were hoodlums that tried to obstruct NIS operatives from arresting smugglers.

According to him, it is the strayed bullets that killed victims.
