Bianca Ojukwu Applauds Spanish Club Over Agbonavbare’s Burial

The Nigerian football community will forever be grateful to Spanish football club, El Rayo Vallecano, for its role in giving a befitting burial to former Nigerian goalkeeper, Wilfred Agbonavbare.

The late footballer died on January 27, 2015 in Spain at the age of 48 after suffering from cancer and was buried in Madrid, Spain on January 29, 2015 at a cemetery in Meco, Alcala, a suburb of Madrid, the Spanish capital.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu commended the president, board and fans of El Rayo Vallecano FC for immortalising the late Nigerian international.

Mrs Ojukwu, who led other officers of the Embassy and some members of the Nigerian community to the stadium to pay their respect and tributes to the deceased, said the club stood firmly behind him during his trying periods.

According to Daily Sun, the Nigerian community in Spain was not happy with the way the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and National Sports Commission (NSC) treated the late goalkeeper, stating that if he was promptly attended to, he would have survived the illness.

Agbonavbare was part of the winning Super Eagles team that clinched the Tunisia ’94 African Cup of Nations tournament
